Hints and Tips
Cancer Council

Here’s some advice from experienced Do Your Thing fundraisers. Pick and choose the tips that work for your Thing:

  1. Have fun - plan to raise the most amount of money in the most efficient and enjoyable way possible!
  2. Agree to match the highest individual pledge – and promote that fact widely. People will be more likely to sponsor an event that you are committed to yourself.
  3. Educate yourself, your committee and your sponsors and supporters about cancer and the effect it has on people. Go to our website for a wide range of cancer-related information.
  4. Stress the importance of a donation, no matter how big or small.
  5. Start fundraising early and ask everyone. Utilise your existing networks such as social/sports clubs.
  6. Set yourself a challenge but realistic fundraising goal. Publicise your goal widely!
  7. Remind people that cash donations are fully tax-deductible.
  8. Ask people for pledges on pay-day or at tax time – timing is everything!
  9. Ask your employer to match the donations made by employees.
  10. Conduct an email campaign.
  11. Celebrities attract more people and hence more money – consider asking a local (or national/international) celebrity to support your fundraiser.
  12. Get existing community networks involved eg. local CWA, fishing club, RSL.
  13. Lower your event costs as much as possible ie. get goods, services, prizes and venues donated.
  14. Approach sponsors to cover costs such as printing, promotions, venue.
  15. Delegate event tasks to people you can rely on and ask for help when you need it.
  16. Do ‘extra' fundraising at your event eg. lucky door prizes, sell decorations at the end, ask everyone to bring a prize that can be raffled/auctioned.
  17. Ask your friends, family and colleagues to collect on your behalf.
  18. Keep your donation record sheet on you at all times so you never miss an opportunity to secure a pledge / donation.
  19. Take lots of photos! Send them in to us so we can use them in our magazines and website to promote fundraising to others (we will return them). Consider using a professional or student photographer.
